The Fashion and Style Section of the New York Times has decided to go after Fred Thompson by attacking his wife Jerri.  She is not "Mrs. Thompson", she is "trophy wife".

Is this what the New York Times has come to?  Trying to act like Page Six of the Post?

Why does the Left love the Fairness Doctrine -- an illiberal policy if there ever was one?

Because the Left fears competition in a way that is self-defeating, self-emasculating, and self-serving.  And the Fairness Doctrine -- among other invidious regulations-- is anti-competitive.  The Fairness Doctrine acts much like Marxism does.  By making the market flatter for all, it diminishes the opportunity for the uniquely talented among us to succeed without succor from the state.  It constrains creativity, argument, debate, reason, and investigation, substituting these high qualities of The Enlightenment for cold elitism of the Guilded Age.

According to the Calvert Street Communist Party Newsletter, State Comptroller Peter Frachot and Marty the Mick are really starting to bump heads, now that Franchot has challenged the state's purchase of some land in Queen Anne's County for $500k above the highest appraisal in an under-the-table deal involving DNR secretary John Griffin.

Uncovering the tip of the iceberg in O'Malley-style corruption, the Guvnah seems a little ticked that he is a getting a flank attack from a supposed ally.  (Hint to Marty the Mick:  Franchot is using the Comptroller's office to get to yours, in case you haven't figured that out).

I doubt this is the last time they will bump heads, as Franchot sees his role as "more than just collecting taxes".  Funny, a brief perousal of the state Constitution doesn't seem to indicate that, but since when has the Maryland Communist Party really cared about written constitutions?

Before the lefty, American-hating liberals in the country win the fight over a premature withdrawl from Iraq, maybe we should get to know our enemy better-- and understand what will happen to the millions of Iraqi people freed from tyranny if we leave them to the Iranian-backed fighters and Al Qaeda camel-humpers.

I mean, we should really understand what these fighters for the so-called "religion of peace" are really about.

The Calvert Street Communist Party Newsletter has a pretty detailed rundown on the "cuts" that Marty the Mick is proposing for the state to "help" close the so-called "structural deficit".

First, they aren't really cuts.

Second, the "structural deficit" is the fault of the Maryland General Assembly and its socialist leaders, backed by fellow travelers in the Red Congress.

Third, I have some ideas the Governor should consider.

Turns out the most left-wing city in America may not have the health care crisis that Michael Moore wants us to believe.

San Francisco allegedly has 82,000 uninsured folks roaming the streets, unable to get health care.

So the city council decided to be goo-goo (that's "good government) in poli-sci speak) types, and pass a universal health care plan.

On day 1 -- Monday -- 29 folks signed up.

Socialism fails to wow the masses yet again.  More here.

H/T:  The perenially beautiful, smart, and witty Mary Katherine Ham.

Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Americans.  And on this hallowed day, I want to express my thanks and gratitude three ways:

First, I want to thank God for blessing our revolution, our cause, our country, and our people.  Not only were we endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable right, but we have been blessed a million times over by Him and all that he has given us-- sometimes when we deserved the exact opposite.  In this, I think America is a shining example of what my Calvinist friends would undeserved grace.  God blessed us to be a blessing; may we forever hold that cherished role in the affairs of His universe.

Second, I want to thank those crazy, brilliant, phenomenal men who toiled on the issue of Independence through the Siege of Boston in 1775 up through July of 1776.  The notion of "an American Nation" was treason at this time.  In fact, most Americans considered themselves Englishmen living abroad, not Colonials.  But the inner desire of their heart-- a desire planted by God and nurtured by the very mother country they renounced -- compared them to dream big and act boldly.  Their act wasn't perfect, and it stil isn't.  But with every year, Americans are more free, more prosperous, and a greater blessing to the entire world.  While Jefferson would no doubt lament our "foreign entanglements", he would be pleased at the character of the men and women we send overseas to those entanglements, and the tremendous efforts they take to protect the innocent and powerless.  Those men set a standard we are hard pressed to meet today.  The created a nation from the toil of farmers and planters, merchants and trappers.

Third, I want to thank the soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen, and coast guardsmen past, present, and future for their steadfast dedication to honor, duty, and country that has preserved the freedoms declared that hot July day two hundred and thirty one years ago.  They are our nation's greatest treasure, and all of them should be honored, respected, and loved for their service and fealty.
