The Baltimore Sun -- also known as the Patapsco Pravda, the O'Malley Gazette, and the Calvert Street Communist Party Newsletter -- is getting set for even more layoffs in 2008. According to the Baltimore Business Journal, the Baltimore-Washington Newspaper Guild is expecting more job cuts within days, as the Sun continues to struggle as part of the Tribune Company. This follows the elimination of 100 positions in August (some through buyouts), and a change in the paper's layout to cut costs.

As I documented in my post Tax Code and Social Dysfunction = Bad News, in 2009, just about 47 million filers will not pay income tax. By "not pay", I do not mean "will be exempt from withholding". By "not pay", I mean that these tax filers will be due refunds from the Federal Government that will be paid out long after those taxes were paid. Which raises the question: if they won't owe the tax in the first place, why are we witholding it?

When we can get beyond talking about very nebulous terms like "the rich" and the "middle class" and "the working poor", and we start looking at who actually pays for the United States of America, we start to see some really disturbing trends in tax policy. And those trends point toward significant political, economic, and social dysfunction that typically lead toward little things like coups and revolutions.

I opposed the government bailout program, called TARP for "Troubled Asset Recovery Program", because I thought a) it would not work, b) the government, in classic style, would completely frak the puppy and screw it up. Well, I was right. You can always bet on government screwing something up. It's the default status. But the latest news on TARP is really disturbing, because the supposedly smartest economic minds on the planet are perpetrating a fraud against the taxpayers of the United States.

Senator Babs Mikulski doesn't get it. She is proposing sales tax and loan interest deductions on new vehicle purchases. But affordability of new vehicles is not the problem with the Big Three Automakers. The problem is that they are not building cars Americans want to buy. And the problem is that the auto manufacturers capitulated to the UAW a hundred times over the last thirty years. The result has been that they pay more people not work and pay more expenses on retirees than they do on workers. And Senator Babs just doesn't want to accept that.

Last Friday, there was a horrible accident on the Rt 1 Bypass in Bel Air that killed Katherine and Wilson Brady, and left her husband Stephen and other son Ian severely injured. It was a horrifying accident on a stretch of road that was not designed to handle the traffic flow that it does today. But it was also horrifying because it could have been prevented. And its time some people got their knickers in a twist so it doesn't happen again.

Sebaceous Puss has this incredible masturbatory obsession with the Gannett Stock Price. Why? Because of his absolute hatred for the Daily Times, and his wholly unjustified belief that he is crushing the Daily Times. Of course, if the Daily Times -- a wholly insignificant paper long before Sebaceous Puss even located to his compound in Southwest Delaware -- were a McClatchey paper, or a Tribune paper, or a Times Co. paper, the Puss would certainly be obsessed with the closing prices of those stocks as well. But since The Puss has this obsession with all things Daily Times, he ignores a lot of "bigger pictures".

O'Guvnah is a big proponent of telling citizens where they should set their thermostats, how much they should drive, what types of cars they should drive, and how much electricity they should use. It would be really nice if O'Guvnah could get his act together and push his own agencies to follow some of that advice.

Over at Monoblogue, Wicomico County Republican Michael Swartz decides to lay out some blame for the apparent loss of Andy Harris to Frank Kratovil, and he comes knocking squarely at the door of several "Pro Maryland Bloggers" that are also part of the "conservative blogosphere" for our opposition to Andy Harris because of his association to Sebaceous Puss, aka Jihad Joe Albero of Southwestern Delaware.
