If Barack Obama is elected president, the one thing you can count on is that we will have a much smaller military.  Leading Democrat mouthpieces like Barney Frank -- who couldn't find his ass with both hands and a flashlight -- are arguing that we need to cut defense spending by at least 25%.  But we need to ask a couple of questions:  what will a military that is 1/4 smaller look like?  What happened the last time we did this?  How will this impact our national security?

Russia is bound and determined to re-establish the Soviet Hegemony over Southern and Eastern Europe.  That is clear from today's decision to officially recognize the breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.  Their stark aggression in Georgia this past month is nothing less than aggressive war -- the kind of war launched by Stalin and Hitler sixty nine years ago in Poland.

We are most certainly facing at least a new Cold War, if not a new Hot War.  And we need a new strategy to confront a new enemy using old tactics.

No, not the heart of the old Confederacy, but the former republic of the Soviet Union.  This is bad news.  Georgia and Russia have been at each other's throats for some time.  Other than Ukraine, Georgia was one of the former separatist republics that hurts the most, because it provides direct access to the trans-Caucusus oil fields and deeper into Central Asia.  In fact, one of the primary pipelines for bringing oil out of Central Asia runs right through it.  And that is why this is not good.
