I want to throw some props to my Delegate, A. Wade Kach, for Co-Sponsoring HB 259. This law would make it illegal to require anyone to present a Social Security Number when such presentation is not required by State or Federal Law.
One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Social Security Number is that it is not supposed to be a general id number. It is only supposed be used for tax purposes (which includes most banking applications), according to the amended Social Security Act of 1948. That provision was included after the heinous us of identification tattoos by the Nazis was introduced.
Unfortunately, all sorts of businesses love to gather this information.
If Delegate Kach is reading this, it would be great for someone in his office to put together an official list of how that number can be used.
