The Gunpowder Chronicle sends a big shout out and "Thank You" to Harford County District Judge Victor Butanis.  Judge Butanis, showing some common sense and practicality rarely seen on Maryland's bench these days, denied bail to Glen Arm's notorious Christopher Lentz, who killed two people on  the Bel Air Bypass last week.  Butanis ruled that Lentz remains a threat.  This was an altogether reasonable determination, given the fact that he had fled the scene of an accident not 90 minutes before killing a mother of two and her son.

Martin Watcher details the inside baseball over Baltimore County's rejection of question of Question A, a Charter Amendment that would have removed the prohibition on council members holding state jobs while serving on the County Council.  I think my fellow citizens of Baltimore County should be applauded for their clear decision making on this Amendment.

With just two days to go as I write this, I thought it was important to list out my endorsements for the 2008 Election.  There is no doubt that this is probably the most important election of my lifetime, as we face some serious issues and challenges at both the state and national level.  We have a clear choice to make.  And while our options are not necessarily perfect, our chance to choose is.

UPDATE:  I incorrectly stated Davis Ruark was a Republican in a previous version.  Article now corrected.

In a move that is not wholly unexpected, States Attorneys Davis Ruark (Wicomico) and Scott Shellenberger (Baltimore County) have endorsed Frank Kratovil over Andy Harris for the seat in the 1st Congressional District.  The latest endorsement -- part of a package endorsement by seventeen other States Attorneys in Maryland -- is a finger in the eye to Andy Harris' most prolific supporter, the convicted perjurer and woman beater I call Sebaceous Puss (aka Jihad Joe Albero).

Mayonaise Shattuck is going to waive his $18 million severance package under the deal to sell Constellation Energy to Mid-American Energy Holdings.  Of course, let's not forget that he is still slated to receive $10.9 million in "owed incentive payments".  And if he is terminated within two years -- which is likely, since you rarely keep around the failed leadership -- he'll be eligible for another $11.3 million in bonuses and a pension upgrade.

All this for a man who drove his company into the ground through profligate incompetence and nearly brought the nation's oldest public utility (BGE) to its knees.

With Election Day just around the corner, I wanted to reiterate my position on the upcoming vote on the Constitutional Amendment to allow video slot machines at five locations around the state.  My position has not changed since this post from April titled "Gambling the Future".

Last Wednesday evening, a good friend of the family -- and a volunteer firefighter to boot -- had a medical emergency involving a family member up here in the Vale of the Gunpowder.  When Medic 60 -- the paid EMS unit for Parkton -- responded to the call, the paramedic on board refused to transport the patient to a Towson hospital, claiming it was "too stormy in Baltimore", and he didn't want to drive there. As a result, the patient was transported to York Hospital in York PA -- an undesirable medical facility if there ever was one.

This is the type of service we can expect from the paid corps of Baltimore County EMS Personnel?
