Interrogatory for Senator John McCain: Do you really want to be President of the United States?
If you do, you need to stop being Mr. Nice Genial Bi-Partisan guy, and you need to start ripping off heads and crapping down necks. Here's how you can start.
Take the battle over the failures of Wall Street and lay them clear at the door of the Democrat Party. Show the clips of Barney "Pillow Biter" Frank and Chris "Countrywide VIP" Dodd defending the reckless actions of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Run the numbers on the screen on how much Franklin Raines, Jim Johnson, and Jaimie Gorelick made while they were filing false accounting statements to boost their bonuses. Show how they bailed on Fannie Mae just as the SEC closed in. Make the point on who paid fines and how much.
Call out SARBOX as a mistake -- admitting a mistake is not a weakness, remember. Show how to mark-to-market drove these companies not just to bankruptcy, but insolvency.
Highlight the senators that you serve with that took massive somes of money from Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and these other failed institutions. Question why government sponsored enterprises --whether they are Fannie and Freddie, or even Amtrak -- can contribute money to campaign accounts.
Show the numbers on the fraud around no-interest, no-doc loans. Use 1st Mariner Bank's Virginia offices for proof of this. They are currently involved in a pretty heavy FBI investigation, as the loan officers in Virginia were bilking the company while senior management was asleep at the wheel.
Talk about the MASSIVE bonuses paid out to Wamu's short-term CEO and Lehman Brothers management, even while their companies were descending into insolvency.
Talk about how the uptick rule cause market instability back in May, June, and July and drove shares down.
In other words, stop being so nice and polite. Take the battle to the enemy. Don't fight this campaign like Johnson and Westmoreland fought Vietnam. Body counts won't work here. You need to win hearts and minds.
Both in your party, and out.
