I thought the Palin pick was brilliant.  But the move to "suspend campaigning" in order to debate one bad idea after another is downright stupid.  Use the bully pulpit of the campaign to push for the right kind of approach.  Use the bully pulpit to display your leadership, your understanding, your vision.  It's not politicizing the crisis.  It's leading the crisis.

By suspending campaigning, you give up that option.  And that is bad.  Very bad.  As President, everything you do is political.  If you switch from Charmin to Scott toilet tissue, it's political.  There is nothing wrong with being political about the people's business.  But there is something very stupid about ceding the high ground, low ground, and middle ground to such a lying, conniving double-talker as your opponent.

Quite frankly, it makes you look scared.  This is an opportunity for John McCain to bust out of the old "I don't really get the economy" mantra and show some marked leadership. You should be grabbing Larry Kudlow by the scruff of the collar and sticking to him like glue.

But no.  This time, when the going got tough... you suspended campaigning.

I'm back in the "why in the hell would I vote in November" camp. Good job, Senator.

Just for the record do you think the Palin pick was good one politically (to pull votes) or policy-wise (bringing something to the table/looked back on favorably by historians)? Man, I wish I could put money on it being a bad choice policy-wise.

And I think it was actually a good move by McCain as pointed out by the main AP article. It is a chance to show leadership and compassion and that he is above politics. Obama pretty much has to say no, I want to get political while the economy hangs in the air or has to agree to what McCain said and look like he is following. Hes trying to put himself in the middle of a crisis, and if he can manage to continue hiding from the press/answering real questions, it might help him.

Interesting little tidbit though about it actually being Obama's idea to release a joint statement in support of a bipartisan relief package, with McCain agreeing but then going running off and trying to claim to be non-political while making political statements.

I think Palin was a great pick politically... although I like her policy positions across the board.

As for Bad picks for vp, the Democrats have a FAR WORSE record than Republicans. Including the current choice. Slow Joe "Gaffe A Day" Biden will end up costing many more votes ... especially in coal producing states.

I still think it is a bad move to suspend campaigning. The simple fact is that these kind of gestures are absolutely meaningless. People want leadership, not grandstanding, and suspending the campaign is saying "Look at me, I am above all this". It's one of the reasons I was never a McCainiac in the first place-- he is always doing this kind of "Look at me, I am above all this" kind of horse crap.

Quite frankly, this will end up being THE driving issue for this election. Do we let the Federal Government assume the debts of the corrupt, the greedy, and the stupid, and make taxpayers responsible for that-- or do we hold people accountable to bad decisions they made? Given that "the experts" don't even know what will happen either way, I think it is the height of hubris to tell me I need to bail out my stupid neighbors.

Suspending campaigning is a stupid thing to do. And it might just have cost McCain my vote.
