When Barack Obama made the statement at the Saddleback Civil Forum that he would not have nominated Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court because he lacked the experience to be a justice, I laughed. Out loud. It was, frankly, a case of the pot calling the kettle black. (Yeah, I know that sounds racist. Which it is why it is all the more appropriate.)
Clarence Thomas was a cum laude graduate of Holy Cross College, and a graduate of Yale Law School. He served as Assistant Attorney General for Missouri, corporate attorney for Monsanto, Assistant Secretary of Education in the Office of Civil Rights in the Department of Education, Chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and as a judge on the US Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia -- the 2nd highest court in the United States.
Which makes Obama's statement ridiculous and his pick of Joe Biden all the more interesting.
You see, Slo Joe played a sly little game with Justice Thomas during his confirmation hearings. Hearings that became the first televised virtual lynching in the history of the US Senate. While Biden didn't stoop the level of Howell Heflin in saying "Long Dong Silver" on national TV, he was as much a part of the lynching -- by trying to make Thomas look silly, stupid, uninformed, and inexperienced. He did this by asking Thomas to comment on a portion of a speech Thomas had given years earlier -- without including the full context of the comments. Biden deliberately and disingenuously twisted his words. Kathryn Jean Lopez has the full story here.
The electronic lynching of Clarence Thomas was the most shameful episode in the long history of the United States Senate. And Joe Biden was not just a bystander, but a willing participant in a crime against the Constitution and Clarence Thomas himself.
And that is the man that Barack Obama chose as his running mate. Think about that for a minute. His mentors included avowed anti-American terrorists (William Ayers, Bernadine Dorn), a hateful and racist pastor (Jeremiah Wright). His financial support comes from a convicted felon (Tony Rezko). And now he has picked a vicious attack dog lyncher for his running mate.
What great judgement the Obamassiah must have.
