Harry Reid, that low-talking mealy-mouthed motherfrakker from Nevada and Senate Majority Leader has successfully attached an amendment to the energy bill that would raise CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards for all cars, trucks, and SUVs to 35 mpg by 2020.
Why doesn't he just pass a law that kills us all right now?
Aside from limiting freedom, increasing gasoline use, and destroying consumer choice, CAFE standards have the notorious history of killing people.
A 2002 study by the National Research Council found that for the year of 1993, CAFE standards then in effect -- which were much lower -- resulted in 1,300 to 2,600 additional highway deaths. Why? Basically, the myth of the 50 mpg carbureator is a myth. So, auto manufacturers dowsize and downweight their cards to meet the standard. Smaller, lighter cards means cars that are not as safe in collisions. So, if we split the difference at 1,950 deaths... that is almost one 9/11 every year of civilian deaths. One can only assume that any sane Senator would not agree with the notion that we should suffer that many highway casualties every year because they get a serious itch to over-regulate.
But this Senator wants you to die, all in the name of "energy independence". Tell me, what is better-- 1950 men, women, and children die on the road every year, or a couple of moose in Alaska's wasteland adjust their migration route while we drill a couple holes?
