The Mayor of Washington, DC is Adrian Fenty. He has been fighting to preserve the District's handgun ban since he was first elected. He doesn't believe that District residents -- who suffer one of the highest crime rates per capita in the world -- should have the right to protect themselves, their families, and their property.
Of course, that silly and stupid position was vacated by the Supreme Court's recent decision in Heller.
But that doesn't stop DC Mayor Moron Adrian Fenty. He wants to create a ban against semi-automatic handguns.
There are, of course, some problems with that. The first is that the decision in Heller explicity sets aside any ban on handguns. It does not provide an exception for types of handguns. In fact, Scalia's majority opinion does not even recognize different classes of handguns.
But more importantly, we should look at the differences between a revolver and a semi-automatic.
Quite frankly, semi-automatics (like popular 9mm, .45, .40, and .380 models) are inherently safer than revolvers. Why? They are less prone to automatic discharge from being dropped, and less prone to fouling of the chamber.
More importantly, semi-automatics are better for women. It's why police forces started converting to them in droves in the late 80s and early 90s. They are easier to handle, easier to aim, and easier to fire. And since women are more likely than men to need to defend themselves, any gun restriction that makes it harder for women to do so is VERY dangerous.
So, Mayor Moron Adrian Fenty wants to promote a policy that would be a) inherently unconsitutional in light of Heller and b) inherently more dangerous to the gun owner.
Smooth move, ex-lax.
