With the essential ending of Congressional business for 2008, we can look back over the last two years of Democrat leadership and see how its gone.
My quick take: Mental Midgetry.
Issue #1: Energy Costs. The Democrats want to cripple the US economy to justify large scale alterations in American lifestyles that conform to a more fascist approach. Not being able to win the argument on the merits, the American left has decided to "force the issue" by creating a massive crisis in energy costs that is causing a crippling ripple effect across all segments of the economy.
They claim to the be the party of the "working class" and the "little man", but their approach on energy costs will utterly destroy the working poor and the middle class. These folks -- their savings (largely in the form of 401(k) plans and stocks -- are being whittled away by a "cheap dollar" policy, massive government debt (next year's budget: $4 trillion!), and massive home devaluations caused by a massively leveraged credit market.
These folks are the last ones able to afford new investments in highly-efficient cars, new highly-efficient heating and cooling systems, high-efficiency hot water systems, and more. Moreover, they are the ones that can least afford the massive increase in fuel prices we are suffering through now.
What is the Democrat answer? Mental midgetry. By obstructing efforts to utilize our own massive energy reserves, they are doing nothing more than making Americans victims.
Issue #2: Jobs and Exports. Democrats -- led by Lil' Nancy Pelosi from Baltimore, and supported by Maryland's two miserable Senators -- Big Mouth Babs Mikulski and and Bobble Head Ben Cardin -- have stymied the President's attempts to sign a free trade agreement with Colombia. It should be noted that Colombia is a thirty-year ally of the United States, and a stalwart firewall against South American fascism. It should also be noted that our drug war has cost thousands of Colombians their lives.
Finally, though, it should be noted that this free-trade agreement would actually remove Colombian tariffs and barriers to American products. You see, the South American Free Trade Agreement already removed tariffs and barriers for Colombian products to enter the United States. This agreement would level the playing field, allowing all sorts of American products -- from Caterpillar and John Deere equipment to Ford cars and Dell computers -- to be sold in Colombia. Given the paltry value of the US dollar, this is exactly the kind of trade deal we need. Our products will be cheaper to buy by Colombians.
So why oppose opening a new market? Mental midgetry, of course.
Issue #3: The Democrat Senate has done a miserable job in filling vacancies in the Federal judiciary. In the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals alone -- which includes our own great state of Maryland -- there are 4 outstanding vacancies on the bench. That is a 25% vacancy rate in one circuit alone. This, despite empty promises from Senator Pat Leahy that he would move all nominations forward.
Issue #4: Fat Jack Murtha's proclamation that the Haditha Marines acted in "Cold Blood". Guess what? Only two Marines still face charges. Five had their charges dismissed. One -- the platoon leader -- was acquitted. So much for in cold blood. But what has happened to Fat Jack Murtha? Nothing. No censure. No recrimination. No demotion from leadership positions. Lil' Nancy still counts him among her closest allies.
Frankly, I would love to see a JAG judge declare that his statements -- before any Article 32 hearing was even committed -- amount to some sort of unlawful command influence. Unfortunately, the US Congress is not in the chain of command for the United States Military, so such a declaration would be meaningless.
But its definitely something to consider the next time Fat Jack tries to point to his service as a Marine.
These are only four issues that I picked to display the absolute mental midgetry that pervades so-called "Democrat Leadership". Frankly, they aren't much worse than the Republicans in the House and Senate -- who allowed a ridiculous and appalling explosion of Federal spending on silly and stupid programs.
