Does Barack "Gaffeman" Obama actually employ a speechwriter for his campaign?  One must wonder, after his latest gaffe.  Speaking to a group of Democrat dignitaries in New Mexico, he began:

On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.

It's a cute sentiment.  The only problem is that on Memorial Day we remember and salute our honored dead, keeping the promise that they shall not have died in vain.

This may sound crass, but I would not have wanted to be in that audience if many of those honored dead were among them today.

Is it possible that a man with an Ivy-league education could be so fundamentally stupid and daft?  Does he not know the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran's Day?  Is it possible that no one on his campaign staff bothered to actually read the speech before he gave it?

To be honest, I am stupefied.  Quite frankly, this is the patriotic equivalent of mixing up Pentecost Sunday and Easter.  It is shameful that a potential Commander-in-Chief would be so cavalier in disregarding the difference between these two noble and solemn holidays.

But maybe that is the problem.  Barack Obama, as an elitist, has little regard for the traditions and symbols of a large swath of flyover country -- things like the important national holidays, patriotic symbols, and values like faith, God, and our natural, inalienable rights.  In his elitist eyes, these are things bitter people "cling to".
