Pat Buchanan's latest diatribe in Human Events speaks loudly as to why he is rightfully an outcast of the modern conservative movement -- and the Republican Party -- in America. It's arguably racist in tone and wording. I am actually ashamed to have read it.
And, as anyone knows, I am definitely not one who sees a clan robe and a Bull Connor attack dog around every corner.
But this piece is scary.
Buchanan's point is to highlight the dramatic demographic shift in the makeup of the world. He claims -- based on some reasonably sound research -- that descendents of White Europe will be outnumbered by 2050. He does it an alarmist fashion, though, and uses phrases like "black and brown peoples". His point seems to be that their color dictates their thoughts, beliefts, and values - and that earthlings of European descent better watch out.
In fact, Buchanan falls into the same trap of racialists and racists on the right and left. He obviously fervently believes that race dictates values. Under this scheme, we should be threatened by a demographic shift that might leave us in a minority.
In Buchanan's little world, our beliefs and values and convictions are solely a product of our birth: where we are born, who we are born to, and what color we are born.
Instead of looking at the causes of the demographic shift, he looks only to frighten and scare people.
Thank God that he is no longer a major influence in American politics.
