Hillary Rodham Clinton is gasping for air tonight. Yes, her flooding the zone strategy worked perfectly in South Carolina, and could have helped her capture the white Democrat vote across the rest of the Old Confederacy. Her Hispanic vote was solid, and she was getting a lot more traction with the unionized base than John "Ambo Chasing" Edwards.
And then the white elephant entered the room.
In Siamese lore, a white elephant is an omen of great good. Siamese Kings used to trek for months into the jungle of Siam to find one, believing that seeing an actual white elephant would be a blessing upon their reign.
But this white elephant is different. This one has a Kelly green tint. And comes with the power of one of America's greatest political dynasties.
Senator Ted "Chivas Regal" Kennedy is slated to endorse Barack Obama tomorrow. And Caroline Kennedy -- daughter of John -- all but endorsed him in a New York Times editorial. It will not be long before the rest of the Hyannisport Heroes -- save KKT and her sister Kerry -- fall in line and do the same.
That giant sucking sound you hear is the air coming out of the Clinton balloon.
Despite a flurry of last-minute calls by Billy, Senator Kennedy is poised to throw his support behind Barack Obama tomorrow, and campaign with him on a Western swing. Ted is apparently -- according to Drudge -- pretty pissed off at the Clinton's repeated references to Obama's race and the racializing of the campaign.
With an endorsement from a Kennedy, Obama will certainly get a second look from Hispanics and unionistas. Kennedy holds a large sway -- no pun intended -- over these core Democrat constituencies. Not to mention, it will place incredible pressure on the Black Establishment to re-think their lockstep support of the cynical and racialist Clintons. The Civil Rights Movement had no better friend in Washington in the 60s than Robert F. Kennedy, and this type of support will force a complete re-examination of their support.
I don't care what the polls say: this race isn't over, and we are in for more surprises.
