Why is John McCain a Republican?
i think it is a fair question, given the fact that John McCain seems to be kinder and gentler toward vicious left-wing ideologues like Carl Levin, Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid and Hillary Clinton, while he brooks no dissent from members of his own party.
On policy and ideas, his ideas are more in-line with major Democrat policies and the rantigns of the lunatic New York Times than his own party. He hates free speech in elections, wants it heavily regulated. He despises tax cuts of any kind -- even when they have proven to grow government revenues. He attempts to lay claim to the mantel of fiscal conservatism, but he proposes bills like the Comprehensive Immigration Reform that would explode entitlement spending, and he refuses to attack his fellow Senators' addiction to to earmarking (both Republican and Democrat).
He gave no grief to William Perry and William Cohen when they were SECDEFs and gutting the military during the 1990s so Bill Clinton could have programs like "midnight basketball" for gang bangers. But he treated Don Rumsfeld like Rumsfeld had just taken his sister's virginity at the senior prom.
He claims to be pro-life, but supports federal funding of embryo-destroying embryonic stem cell research. And his more conservative colleagues and former colleagues -- among them Pennsylvanian Rick Santorum -- provide ample evidence that firmly objected to any attempt to raise pro-life issues on the Senate floor.
And on judges -- let us not forget the Gang of 14, which kept in place a disastrous filibuster technique for denying the President's nominees and up or down vote on the floor of the Senate. Forget any constitutional notions of "advise and consent", John McCain believes in "delay, distort, and ignore".
And on national security, where was he in defending General Petraeus while his very good friend Hillary Clinton was calling the General a liar on the floor of the Senate? Where was he when his other very good friend Dick Durbin was comparing US troops to Nazis, Pol Pot, and the Stasi? Where was he when Congressman John "Abscam" Murtha was trying and convicting US Marines before they even had been given an Article 32 hearing? Did Senator McCain's silence reflect well upon the Naval Service? I don't think so...
So I am left wondering, why is John McCain a Republican? So far, he has gotten far more votes from independents than actual Republicans in the primaries held to date. He is a media darling, which means he cannot be a conservative. The media only loves conservatives with drug and sex problems.
One wonders if the Republcian Party will end up nominating someone who really isn't a Republican, just to beat their own most hated enemy.
I hope not, or I won't be voting for anyone on the ballot next November.
