Rock on to some more reasonable members of the General Assembly, who have wisely introduced a bill that prevents the Motor Vehicle Administration from issuing a driver's license, state ID, or moped operator's license to illegal aliens.  House Bill 288 would require anyone seeking such a license who was before after December 1, 1964 to present proof of legal residence in the United States.

The bill is pretty aggressive.  You can read the full text here (requires Adobe Acrobat).  I have two concerns:

1)  It does explicitly list the types of documentation allowed under the statute, or what that documentation must include to be valid.  I think that listing this would be very helpful in resisting the inevitable Judicial Attack that will come once the lawyers at the ACLU and La Raza get their hands on it.

2) It does not explicity exclude the use of a driver's license issued in another state as such a document.  Maryland should not accept on faith alone the determination of another state's licensing agency that a person should receive a driver's license.

I'll be writing to Del. Wade Kach -- a co-sponsor of the leglislation -- on my concerns, and I'll post his reply as soon as I get it.
