There are days when I wished in Harford County. They have some visionary leaders there that look at problems and see the potential for solutions. Real solutions. No liberal facist tropes about raising taxes, and compulsory "good government" nonsense. Real solutions that solve multiple problems
One such example is today's Calvert Street Communisty Party Newsletter article on Harford County's plans to replace their waste-to-energy plant.
The problem is simple: Harford County, which already recycles 63 percent of its garbage, is running out of landfill space. Despite converting almost 1,500 tons of garbage to energy daily, their landfill will run out of space SOON. Their current plant, which runs at 90% capacity, supplies energy for steam and electricity to the Edgewood Arsenal. The current plan is totally self-sufficient, generating more than enough revenue to cover the cost.
The solution: By replacing the current plant with a new one (costing about $340 million), the county can generate even MORE power to help run more of Aberdeen Proving Ground AND power up to 12,000 homes. And, being built with even better 21st century technology, this new plant would be even cleaner, even more efficient, and product even less by-product. It would also extend the life of the landfill by 60 years. The new Harford County plant would even be able to take a large amount of garbage from neighboring Baltimore and Cecil Counties.
Now this is leadership and innovation. Solving multiple problems with a great solution.
When will we see this kind of leadership in Baltimore County? When will Jimmy Smith step up to the plate? Baltimore County faces the same problem in landfill capacity, and has even less room to expand theirs (especially the main landfill in Texas). No, as long as O'Guvnah's O'Brother's boss is in charge, we will only see problems in search of solutions.
