Baltimore County Public Schools, in creating a list of banned activities, tries to slay a dragon that doesn't exit.  No more hayrides, no carnival rides, no school ski-trips or overnight lock-ins.  No pool parties. No canoeing -- unless it is part of the science curriculum.

Michele Prumo, head of the school's Office of Risk Management, is trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.  It's not like the county or the school system has been sued because someone was hurt.  And in the event that a student was hurt -- it is not all that certain what level of responsibility the system would have. In most cases, the system would be held harmless.

To me, it just seems like another way for the "nattering nabobs of negativism" to strip just about anything they can of joy.

Meanwhile, there is no word about Prumo's stance on school buses without seat belts.  Or sending students into buildings that are some of the oldest in the state.  Or the dangers of youth athletic programs and the risks of lawsuits against the system for improper care and upkeep of fields and facilities.  Do we cancel the state cross country championships in Hereford because someone might sprain an ankle?

Maybe Michele Prumo should rename her office the "Office of Joyless Risk Elimination".
